Dan Birdwell underwent surgery in his hometown of Houston to remove a bone chip in his right elbow. He had first noticed pain in the elbow during the 1964 training camp, but it wasn't properly diagnosed until this off-season. He was expected to be ready to go when the 1965 season camp was to open in July.
