News

• The AFL, the Jets, and the Raiders agreed to move the upcoming exhibition game, scheduled for the 23rd in Mobile, Alabama, to the 25th at Frank Youell Field after the Ladd Stadium board refused to allow Black spectators to attend the game.

• Raiders head coach Al Davis and the Black members of the Raiders who had planned to sit out in protest–Art Powell, Bo Roberson, Clem Daniels, Fred Williamson, Proverb Jacobs, and Gene White–expressed their disappointment at not being able to get the policy changed.

• But Davis added: “the decision was the only one that could be made, not only from our players' point of view, but from the whole morality of the thing.”

• The decision received the “firm support” of the AFL, but the teams had to give up their $15,000 gate guarantee and had to reimburse the stadium administration $2,500 in game prep costs.

• The Raiders were also paying the Jets' travel costs.

• Co-owner Wayne Valley said the team's finances would “take a beating, (but) sometimes you got to.”
