Quarterback Roman Gabriel filed a suit naming the Rams, the Raiders, and the NFL as defendants, and requested $200,000 in damages. In the suit, he alleged that the Raiders had been in breach of a contract he had signed with them last year and accused the Rams of interfering in the execution of that contract. He further argued that the NFL was in violation of anti-trust laws by restraining free trade. While the Raiders argued they had a valid contract with Gabriel and expected him to honor it, Gabriel's lawyer said his client was under contract to the Rams and would play for them in 1967. NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle also asserted that Gabriel was contractually obligated to play for the Rams, not the Raiders.
