“AFL $ Drive On…Money Key to Franchise in Oakland”, Scotty Stirling

Stirling said now that the city’s officials were in favor of getting an AFL franchise the focus of the effort had shifted to finding someone to bankroll the operation. Los Angeles owner Barron Hilton was clearly the main driver from the league side of things. Robert Lurie and former Stanford star Ernie Nevers were mentioned as was an unnamed “prominent Oakland industrialist”.

“Councilmen Seek Football Stadium…City Fathers Endorse Efforts to Bring Pro Grid Team in New League to Oakland”

In addition to issuing their support for a football team, the mayor was tasked with putting together a group to look into stadium construction. Council members raised various questions: would the stadium be funded by taxpayers, how large should the stadium committee be, could a team temporarily use Candlestick Park, should they get the county, and maybe the state, involved. The council voted to place no limit on the number of members appointed to the committee and council member Dan Marovich suggested the city could issue revenue bonds to pay for a stadium.

“Getting Stadium Major Difficulty”, Ray Haywood

Haywood said the city had been seeking a stadium for years, but that voters had balked at paying for it. He argued that Oaklanders would need to see a team first and that meant the team would have to play in San Francisco or Berkeley on a temporary basis, though he acknowledged there were difficulties with that approach, too. He also lobbied that the team be named the “Oaks.”
