In their preseason opener, the Raiders fell to the Oilers, 35-17, in Honolulu. Oilers halfback Billy Cannon rushed for 149 yards in the win. Raiders quarterback Tom Flores suffered a concussion in the first half and was replaced by Nick Papac.

Linebacker Tom Louderback suffered a thigh bruise.

Defensive tackle Hal Smith suffered a slight shoulder injury.
