News

Robert Osborne said the speculation over a possible general manager and coach was wildly premature, as there were plenty of other things to think about first and that the ownership hadn't even met together as a group yet. Nevertheless, Scotty Stirling reported that former Navy head coach Eddie Erdelatz, who was a candidate for the open job at Cal, had expressed interest. Stirling also reported that Osborne “hinted” that there might be potential sites to play not in San Franciso, but wasn't more specific. Still, the San Francisco Parks Commission said their facilities were available to the team and San Francisco Giants owner gave a conditionally favorable response to the possibility of the team playing in Candlestick Park. Ray Haywood had a number of suggestions. He liked Erdelatz or Washington State's Jim Sutherland for coach, Oaks for a nickname, green and gold for colors, and Cal's Memorial Stadium for a venue. (haywood, ot)
