News

  • The Chronicle reported that wide receiver Art Powell had requested that the Raiders trade him to the Bills. The story cited Powell as saying that his neighbors at his home in Richmond had been treating Powell, a Black man, and his wife, a white woman, and his kids poorly, and that he wanted to move to Toronto where his wife was from and where they would be subject to less racism. In stories published in the afternoon papers, Powell said he had requested a trade, but not because of his neighbors’ behavior, and simply wanted to live in Canada near his wife’s family. Powell added that he had been treated with nothing but respect by head coach Al Davis, but Davis said he had no plans to trade Powell that the matter was something the team “was not in a position to control.” Powell had suggested that he be traded for Buffalo fullback Cookie Gilchrist and that Gilchrist wanted to go to Oakland.
