  • Tribune columnist George Ross reported that the Raiders and Jets had come to an agreement regarding New York’s signing of placekicker Jim Turner. The Raiders had protested Turner’s signing with the league, arguing that the league had awarded signing rights to all players cut by the Redskins, which Turner had been, to the Raiders. According to Ross, the Raiders gave up the rights to Turner in exchange for unspecified “reciprocal considerations.”

  • The Tribune’s George Ross reported that Chiefs’ head coach Hank Stram was trying to talk quarterback Cotton Davidson into ending his playing career and joining Kansas City’s coaching staff, though the efforts hadn’t yet borne fruit.
  • The team signed a three-year broadcast rights deal with KDIA Radio that doubled the reach of the network from seven to fourteen stations. The money part of the deal was not reported.

The Recreation Department was considering using the money to expand Frank Youell Field beyond the 4,100 seats already planned for 1964, possibly up to 6,000 additional seats.

  • Defensive back Warren Powers underwent surgery to remove calcium deposits in his left gluteus medius sometime in the past few days. The deposits had been causing pain in his left leg that bothered him during the 1964 season. He hoped to be ready to go when training camp started in July.
  • The Raiders announced their preseason schedule, which would open on August 7 against the Chargers in San Diego. The other dates on the schedule were: August 14 vs Denver in Salt Lake City, August 22 vs the Chiefs at Frank Youell Field, August 28 vs the Chargers in Portland, and September 4 vs the Broncos in Sacramento.

  • The Chronicle reported that wide receiver Art Powell had requested that the Raiders trade him to the Bills. The story cited Powell as saying that his neighbors at his home in Richmond had been treating Powell, a Black man, and his wife, a white woman, and his kids poorly, and that he wanted to move to Toronto where his wife was from and where they would be subject to less racism. In stories published in the afternoon papers, Powell said he had requested a trade, but not because of his neighbors’ behavior, and simply wanted to live in Canada near his wife’s family. Powell added that he had been treated with nothing but respect by head coach Al Davis, but Davis said he had no plans to trade Powell that the matter was something the team “was not in a position to control.” Powell had suggested that he be traded for Buffalo fullback Cookie Gilchrist and that Gilchrist wanted to go to Oakland.

  • Following up on yesterday’s publication of the story that wide receiver Art Powell had requested that he be traded to the Bills for fullback Cookie Gilchrist, Buffalo coach Lou Saban said he had no intention of trading Gilchrist and that any negotiating would be done with Oakland general manager Al Davis, not a player. Davis also said he wasn’t interested in making such a trade.

  • The Tribune reported that former Raiders defensive back Rich Mostardi was suing the team $6,195 in unpaid salary and an additional $2,150 in punitive damages. Mostardi, who played for the Raiders in several games in the 1962 season, said he had signed a contract in September 1961 for $8,600, but was injured shortly after and was released by the team in October. Mostardi asserted that he was only paid a little over $2,000 and was owed the remainder of the money.
  • Santa Rosa radio broadcaster Dan Galvin was hired to join Bob Blum on Raiders game broadcasts as the color commentator.

  • The Berkeley Gazette reported that cornerback Fred Williamson had joined wide receiver Art Powell in requesting a trade. According to the story Williamson was hoping to go to New York and take advantage of the media attention he would garner there.
  • The paper also reported that Powell was suing the Chronicle for reporting that he had been experiencing racism from his neighbors in Richmond. The amount of the suit was $1 million.
  • Quarterback Tom Flores underwent surgery for a deviated septum.

  • NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle ruled that the rights to the services of rookie Arizona halfback Tony Lorick belonged to the Colts. Both the Raiders and the Colts drafted Lorick and both claimed to have signed him to a contract. Raiders general manager Al Davis argued that his team had signed Lorick first, but Rozelle was unmoved by the argument. Davis said the team “(did) not consider the matter closed.”

Per a league agreement, each AFL team was given the right of first refusal of players released by particular NFL teams–in the Chiefs case, the Cards or Bears. According to the terms of the Carolan trade, the Raiders were given that right for a single player of their choice.
